Artist Spotlight: Sim Sim
Sim Sim is a vietnamese artist based in France. His drawings explore the idea of melancholia and memories that shape his life. Through his body of work, he seeks to convey the inherent emptiness and longing that loneliness can evoke. To create such moods, he depicts his subjects in daily commute, nocturnal and neon lights. “My art is an homage to the feelings of isolation one can experience in a city”.
Like a window of his thoughts, emotions and experiences, he mainly uses a sketchbook as a diary to capture the fragility of memories.
Drawing is his way of keeping an indelible mark on his brain and immortalizing all these moments through a physical form. “Flipping through my sketchbook, I can relive all the scenes like a vivid memory! It’s like watching a movie about my life”
With charcoal and pastel, he recreates these analog and cinematic feelings. “It’s fascinating how you can create such a visual with just dust of colors. It creates shapes, lights and finally life.”
