Juxtapoz Magazine – The Chaos He Memorialized: RIP, San Francisco Photography Legend, Dave Schubert
It feels as if an period of San Francisco has handed with the information of the loss of life of photographer, Dave Schubert. Several of my earliest recollections of artwork, of underground culture, of daily life currently being fucking lived, was by the lens and eye of Dave Schubert. He was telling me the tale of my dwelling metropolis without me even currently being aware of it. From graffiti to skateboarding, city scenes to just city lifestyle as it was in this wild city in the 1990s and early 2000s, Schubert gave it an identity, a purpose, and froze the chaos for record to see. We protected Schubert a lot of times in the internet pages of Juxtapoz, but it was the words of Austin McManus that he wrote in 2013 that resonated with us now. —Evan Pricco
“It is 2013 and Dave Schubert doesn’t have a site. He even now shoots movie and continues to develop his images the ol’ style way, with chemicals. I really don’t imagine he chooses to do the job in this passé strategy to be some type of purist or to spite technologies, but rather he understands that the total excellent of an image designed by the traditional photography system is excellent to none, notably in the black and white division. Dave’s photographic footprint is abnormally unique, cleverly crafted, and will go away a long lasting effect deep inside of your overstimulated memory bank.
“When I assume of Dave’s illustrations or photos, I see intimate and uncomfortable sexual encounters, uncooked vandalism in a wide variety of varieties, the dim nature of human actions, and admiration for easy items like a lightning bolt or a set of lips. What he chooses to current to the general public is by no suggests very easily digestible or for mass attraction. The unsettling character of his illustrations or photos is the attract and Dave is not below to ease and comfort.” —Austin McManus, Juxtapoz, 2013
