Fascinatingly unique portraits from Japanese artist Yuya Hashizume.

Hashizume, who is from Okayama Prefecture, Japan, gained recognition for his “eyewater” series, which showcases subjects reminiscent of Japanese anime with single-color backgrounds, captured at the moment a tear falls from their eyes. Drawing inspiration from manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio and his popular character Doraemon, Hashizume’s work explores themes of originality, fiction, and anonymity while incorporating the rounded drawing style he admired in the Doraemon series.

Hashizume’s artistic journey began with self-taught art and illustration before presenting his work in independently organized exhibitions. His first exhibition, “eyewater” in Tokyo, garnered a well deserved response from viewers and art critics alike. Since then, he has held solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Bangkok, Seoul, and London, including a successful large-scale solo exhibition “eyewater SHANGHAI” at XU Gallery, Powerlong Museum, Shanghai. Hashizume’s hometown of Okayama remains important to him, as he frequently holds exhibitions there and aims to contribute to the local community on an ongoing basis.
